Low weight birth - live infants born weighing less than 2500 grams (5.51 lbs). Traditionally this has been considered the point below which the infant may have health problems. Low birth weight babies may be born to mothers who do not receive proper care when they are pregnant or who use alcohol, tobacco, or drugs. Low birth weight is less of a problem if the baby is carried to full term (39-40 weeks).
